Teachers Strike: Northern Ireland schools closed as five unions take action

Members of Northern Ireland's five teaching unions are on strike, primarily over a long-running salary dispute. Teachers taking part in this strike that has forced the closure of most schools in Northern Ireland claim they had no choice but to strike.

Melanie Doherty asked why her labor's worth much lesser than it is in the rest of the UK when there's a world-class education system. She stated that instructors would leave Northern Ireland if they did not act.

Public sector workers are also on strike, affecting ports, MOT centers, and courts. Ms. Doherty addressed reporters before joining her colleagues on the picket line at Foyle College in Londonderry.

She claimed that before joining the picket line with her coworkers at Foyle College in Londonderry, she was "downhearted." Also, teachers felt there was "no other way" to make their point.

"We have a world-class education system, but if we keep cutting and undervaluing teachers." She also warned they wouldn't have that in Northern Ireland for much longer.

The National Association of Head Teachers is participating in the full-day strike for the first time, joining four other teaching unions that walked out on February 21. It is the first time in the NAHT's 125-year existence that members have gone on strike over compensation.

Members of the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (Nipsa), the public employees' union, as well as the General and Municipal Workers (GMB), Unite, the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS),  and all of the teachers' unions, are all involved.

The strike by teacher unions is primarily motivated by a compensation dispute, which has been ongoing for over a year. Unions rejected a compensation offer from businesses for 2021-2023, one they referred to as "inadequate" in February 2022.

The cost of living has risen dramatically, with inflation exceeding 10% ever since. However, with Stormont's education budget under tremendous strain, it is being determined how much money is available to make a pay offer to teachers that the unions would accept.

For the first time in this conflict, employees of Northern Ireland's further education (FE) colleges who are members of the NASUWT (National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers) will strike with their coworkers.

According to the general secretary of Nipsa, Carmel Gates, their employees are severely underpaid and are being pushed onto the bread line.

INTO (Irish National Teachers' Organisation) Northern Secretary Mark McTaggart also warns about the Irreparable damage this crisis would have in the lives of young people across the North.

On April 27 and May 2, several teachers in England are scheduled to strike. Northern Ireland's Department for Infrastructure has issued a statement stating that the city employees' strike may impact its public services.

However, he added that the public should expect disruption to some services and that matters regarding life and property would be prioritized. According to the government, there will be a severe loss in its ability to respond to flood crises should they arise, and the Strangford ferry will not run due to an ongoing strike.

It stated that services might be administered while Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA) test centers are anticipated to open. Customers with scheduled appointments should show up on time unless specifically instructed otherwise by the DVA.
