NYSC disowns fraudulent ex-copper, cautions against uniform abuse

The National Youth Service Corps administration has dissociated itself from an ex-copper, Ukanwa Ikechukwu, indicted on Friday at an Iyaganku Magistrate'sMagistrate's Court in Oyo State for allegedly defrauding a police officer of N235,000.

In a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the NYSC clarified that Ikechukwu was an ex-copper who had completed his youth service in February 2023.

The scheme warned corps members that their uniforms did not provide immunity from impunity. The message says in part that the Oyo State NYSC management's attention has been drawn to the information circulating on social media.

This is about the corps member sent to prison in Ibadan, Oyo State, for a criminal offense. The management would like to clarify the following: "The Ukanwa Ikechuwuku, as mentioned earlier, is currently an ex-corps member who completed his/her National Service in February 2023."

"Secondly, while he was in service, he raised N235,000 to pay for a woman's physiotherapy equipment at the police clinic where he was stationed, but he could not do so. The woman made several unsuccessful attempts to have this ex-corps member repay her money. As a result, she decided to file a criminal complaint against him.

Eddy Megwa emphasized that wearing an NYSC uniform does not grant one protection from crime. This is so that everyone is subject to the Federal Republic of Nigeria laws.

Inspector Olufemi Omilana, the prosecutor's attorney, told the court that Ukanwa was accused of stealing N235,000 from ACP Modupe Okpaleke on December 4, 2022, at about midday, to commit fraud.

Omilana claimed that Ukanwa, a physiotherapy student at the Police Cottage Hospital in Eleyele, Ibadan, stole N235,000 from Okpaleke and exploited it to his advantage. ACP Okpaleke encountered Ukanwa while seeking treatment for a leg issue at the Police Cottage Hospital in Eleyele, Ibadan, according to the police.

He (the defendant) then advised her to get a bicycle. Omilana claims the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000 Sections 390 (9) and 419 were violated. The police accused the defendant of fraud and theft.

But the accused entered a not guilty plea to the accusation. The defendant was released on bail in the amount of N500,000 with two sureties in the same amount, according to Magistrate M. I. Giwa-Babalola.

He set a hearing date on May 25 for the subject. The NYSC management has asked corps members to behave admirably and wisely to uphold the program's basic ideals in their interactions.
