In the early hours of Tuesday, at least three Maoists—among them a senior cadre—were murdered, and one deputy superintendent of police (DSP)-the rank officer was hurt in an encounter with security officers from the state intelligence wing (SIW) in the Kalahandi district of Odisha.

Maoists were encountered in the Taperenga-Ludengad forest in the Kalahandi district of Odisha, which borders the Kandhamal district, in the Madanpur Rampur police station area.

According to Amitabh Thakur, additional director general of police (anti-Maoist operations), the SIW team received information about the existence of a Maoist camp in the Taperenga-Ludengad forest within the Madanpur Rampur police station area of Kalahandi abutting Kandhamal district.

According to Thakur, the SIW personnel acted on the intelligence inputs in the Taperenga-Ludengad forest immediately because it would have taken a long time to get Special Operation Group commandoes from Bhawanipatna town to conduct the operation. However, the Maoists opened fire on the SIW personnel when they arrived in the region.

He added that three or more Maoists were slain in the retaliation. In addition, one of their DSPs was shot in the leg. After being treated in a hospital in Bolangir, he is now being transported to Bhubaneswar.

An AK-47 gun was reportedly found at the scene of the encounter, according to the ADG (ops), suggesting that one of the murdered Maoists was either a divisional committee or state committee member.

The operation on Tuesday was one of the few by SIW officials, who are primarily focused on gathering information concerning Maoist movements. It becomes significant in light of the recent naxal attack in Chhattisgarh, which resulted in the deaths of 10 District Reserve Guard (DRG) members and a civilian driver on April 26.
