One woman was killed in a house explosion early on Friday in Berkin, Massachusetts. According to CBS Boston, a second woman who was saved from the debris by neighbors is currently receiving medical attention.
According to station sources, the woman who perished in the Berkin explosion was thought to be in her 80s. As the fire progressed, the fire chief claimed that neighbors flocked to the site to lift pieces of the roof off the survivor.
Due to non-life-threatening injuries, she is in stable condition at a hospital.
Berkin Fire Chief Michael McQuillen praised the neighbors' actions, calling them "very heroic" to enter, lift the object, and free the woman. "At that time, the fire spread swiftly; every second counts. It was a factor in her survival and life-saving."
According to McQuillen, the scene was contacted at around 3:30 in the morning. He declared, "It's completely leveled." "When we got there, nothing was standing but a debris pile because it collapsed upon itself when it exploded."
Materials were seen hanging from the trees above the site of the former house, according to McQuillan, who claimed a "large debris field" left over from the explosion. Later in the morning, firefighters were still visible putting out hotspots. Other nearby residences also sustained minor damage as a result of flying debris.
The fire's cause is still being investigated and has not been immediately revealed.
