Nottingham Forest B-Team head coach Warren Joyce helped Carl Jenkinson get a move away from the City Ground in 2022. The player endured a pretty rotten time of things at Forest and was allowed to leave in search of regular game time.
Jenkinson signed for Forest from Arsenal but struggled to get himself into the team on a regular basis. Shortly after arriving he got injured and was then forced to watch Matty Cash transform into a quality right-back.
The 31-year-old spent three years at Forest in total. He made just 15 appearances for the club and spent a lot of his time at the club either injured or out of favour.
Joyce helped Jenkinson exit Forest
The B-Team head coach was seemingly a big fan of Jenkinson when he was at Forest. After falling down the pecking order, the defender was often found training with the under-21s, led by Joyce.
Speaking exclusively to The Athletic, Jenkinson has explained how Joyce helped him leave Forest. He joined Melbourne City on loan and now plays with their A-League rivals Newcastle Jets.
Jenkinson told The Athletic: “He felt I had something to offer that was being wasted. One day he said to me, ‘Would you go to Melbourne City?’, I remember thinking I wasn’t even sure where in Australia Melbourne was!”
Jenkinson indebted to respected Joyce
Forest could have very few coaches better overseeing their B-Team than the widely respected Joyce. He spent several years working at Manchester United and he’s a master at coaching youngsters.
Clearly, he saw something in Jenkinson when he was at Forest and it speaks volumes of the man that he helped get him hooked up. The defender endured a frustrating time of things at Forest and he was keen to get out.
Jenkinson was constantly fighting a battle to get into the Forest team. Once Cash became a wonderful right-back his chances were always going to be slim and it’s great for the player that he’s now able to play regular football.
