Universal Periodic Review to review Gabon's human rights record

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a Working Group of the UN Human Rights Council, will review Gabon's human rights record for the fourth time on Tuesday, January 24, 2023.

The first UPR reviews for Gabon were conducted in May 2008, the second in October 2012, and the third in November 2017.

Universal Periodic Review to review Gabon's human rights record

The unique UPR procedure entails a yearly assessment of members of the 193 UN Member States' human rights records. All 193 UN member states have undergone three rounds of review since its first meeting in April 2008, during the first, second, and third UPR cycles.

States are expected to highlight recent human rights accomplishments in their country. They will also highlight their efforts to implement recommendations made during previous reviews that they pledged to follow up on during the fourth UPR cycle.

The UPR Working Group will assess Gabon as one of the States during its next 42nd session, which runs from January 23 to February 3. The UPR Extranet will be updated with the speakers' list and all statements that may be made throughout the evaluation of Gabon.

The UPR Working Group will review Gabon's ideas at 15.30 on January 27. The reviewed Voice may express its thoughts on any recommendations given to it.

Erlyne Antonela Ndembet Damas, the minister of justice in charge of gender equality and human rights, will serve as the delegation's leader. Morocco, Viet Nam, and Costa Rica are the three national delegates acting as the "troika" for the review of Gabon.

The following documents form the basis for the reviews:

1) A national report containing data from the state being evaluated;

2) Reports from the Special Procedures, human rights treaty bodies, and other UN organizations on independent human rights experts and organizations;

3) Data supplied by other stakeholders, such as national human rights organizations, regional groupings, and civil society organizations.

You may find the three studies that served as the foundation for the evaluation of Gabon on January 24 here.
