The suspects in match-fixing from Uganda, Russia, and Kenya who were detained last Friday in Roysambu were released yesterday after showing up in court with an Sh300,000 bond and matching sureties.

The three defendants—Martin Munga Mutua of Kenya, Akhiad Kubiev of Russia, and Bernard Nabende of Uganda—appeared in court on Monday. They also refuted accusations of cheating in violation of section 315 of the penal code and conspired to commit a felony in violation of section 393 of the penal code.

"You jointly conspired with others not before the court to deliver football match-fixing of the City Stars versus Sofapaka game that would be played at Ruaraka on March 11, 2023, in exchange for a payment of 14,000 USD to Samson Otieno Aloo," the charge sheet stated.

They were detained after meeting with Nairobi City Stars players and officials on Friday to allegedly fix their FKF Premier League match against Sofapaka on Saturday. Festo Omukoto, a former Kakamega Homeboyz midfielder, and Nairobi City Stars CEO Patrick Korir provided the police with the information that led to their action.

The fixers asked Omukoto, a Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) ambassador currently serving a match-fixing ban, to put him in touch with City Stars players so that they could fix their match against Sofapaka on Saturday.

The fixers were eventually apprehended in Roysambu after Omukoto made contact with City Stars CEO Patrick Korir, and together, they devised a plan to catch them. They wanted us to concede one goal early on and two more goals after the first 75 minutes, in line with their plan.

Thus, we had to ensure that we conceded two goals before scoring. They needed seven players, including a goalkeeper, defenders, and midfielders,  Korir told Capital Sport to carry out the plan.
