The residents in Seychelles population stand at 100,477 compared to the 2010 census, when the population was 90,945. This shows an increase of 9.9%. The total number of houses in the country is 30,835, of which 91% of it are occupied.
This information was revealed yesterday by Burny Payet, who is a statistician at the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), during a dissemination session which was on the provisional Population and Housing 2022 Census result.
Yesterday morning at Eden Bleu Hotel, the chairperson of the NBS board and Governor of the Central Bank of Seychelles (CBS), Caroline Abel, in her opening remarks to begin the session, said data collected across wide areas related to population and housing provides basic information for monitoring the growth of a country and its people over time.
She noted that "timely circulation of good census data is key to reporting, planning, policy formulation and monitoring of targets at the regional, national, and international levels.
Lots of people were present at the session, among which are Bernard Georges, Patrick Payet, representatives of churches, principal secretaries, chief executives, district administrators and the civil society.
Mr Payet stated in his presentation that the population census of the country made up of Seychellois and non-Seychellois consists of 46,220 females (46%) and 53,927 males (54%). It was 48% females and 52% males in 2010.
Males are higher in the 2022 population due to the fact that migrant workers are predominantly male. 84% of the population in the 2022 recorded census are Seychellois. In the 2010 recorded Census, 91% were Seychellois.
Most of the population lives in Mahé and satellite islands, making the inhabitants 88,382 (88%). It is followed by Satellites islands and Praslin with 7,614 (7.6%), Inner Islands and La Digue with 3,430 (3.3%), and 1021 inhabitants(1%) in the outer Islands.
The population growth rate has been described as "stable". This was the first time that the Population and Housing Census had been done digitally.
The census takers that are 500 plus at household levels used tablets for interviews. Laura Ah-Time, NBS chief executive, said the main reports of the CensusCensus will be out by the end of the year.
The CensusCensus was held for one week. It started on April 22, 2022, and in May and June, it was followed by a callback to the household. The CensusCensus was to hold in 2020 as it is held every ten years. Due to the pandemic, the CensusCensus was postponed to 2022.
