Seychelles and Israeli prison services discuss future training and cooperation
Seychelles Prison Service recently held discussions with Israeli prison services in several areas. A few areas are training in escort services, data analysis and management and dynamic security.
According to a press release by the Seychelles Prison Service on September 1, the first virtual meeting took place on August 30, 2022. It was led by Raymond St. Ange, who is the commissioner of the Seychelles prison service.
The meeting gave an opportunity for the service to have a session with the Israeli Prison Service in serious areas of prison operations. St. Ange, speaking to SNA on Friday, said the areas that were being discussed are areas where the local prison service needs to improve.
He indicated that during his visit in early 2020 to Israel, he had the opportunity to visit a prison headquarters. That was when he noticed the knowledge Israeli officers had and the training programme in place.
St. Ange said, "The work there is serious". The officers encounter different situations daily and thereby have a sharp platform and good background to operate from. Solid training ground is part of the things we lack here.
We need to approach things differently to guarantee our staff's security, especially when they are training.
The commissioner looks forward to welcoming an Israeli officer to the country. The officer will evaluate services and work done at the Seychelles Prison Service.
St. Ange said, "based on the response, we will take necessary measures and come up with a plan."
Apart from discussions with the Israeli Prison Service, the University of Seychelles has also taken part by creating short courses for officers who work with the Seychelles Prison Service.
Some of the courses include De-escalation and conflict resolution, officer safety and lots more. St. Ange said, "together with our partners, we can put together about 12 to 15 modules including report writing, basic writing, English skills and interview techniques."
The commissioner further said the Seychelles Prison Service has a great number of things to do with a small team and administration. The prison's management has to be our focus.
St. Ange said, "we are in the process of constructing a new remand facility, a high-security prison, as well as a youth offenders facility for Praslin.
