On Tuesday, the Seychelles Supreme Court handed down a two-and-a-half-year prison term to Russian national Dimitri Sandul, 39, for intentional neglect that resulted in his 17-month-old son Emelyan Jandurl's death.
The 17-month-old Russian infant passed away on January 21 after being abandoned in an air-conditioned vehicle in a gym parking lot in the Anse Royale neighborhood of Mahe.
The baby died after being left "unattended in a vehicle at high ambient temperature, which caused, among other things, acute cerebral oedema and hypothermia," according to the postmortem report, the prosecution said last week.
The swelling of the brain is referred to as cerebral oedema, and prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures results in hypothermia.
Jandurl agreed to intentional neglect but entered a not-guilty plea to the first count of involuntary manslaughter. His wife Viktorya was acquitted of all accusations and granted permission to depart the country with their other two kids.
Alexia Amesbury, Jandurl's attorney, asked David Esparon, the sitting judge, if her client may be sent back to Russia. Esparon stated that this is possible if Seychelles and Russia have a contract.
The convicted person and his attorney must communicate with the Russian Embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs of Seychelles. In addition, the convicted person and attorney must share with the Russian Embassy and the Department of Foreign Affairs of Seychelles.
