Over 100 million SIMs reportedly made locally- NCC

Over 100 million Subscriber Identity Modules, or SIM cards, have reportedly already been made locally. This was in the year of the first Nigeria Telecommunications Indigenous Content Expo, according to the Nigeria Communications Commission, or NCC.

Aderonke Sola-Ogunsola, the leader of the NCC's financing and stakeholder engagement team, said this at this year's AFRICANXT on Thursday in Lagos. Ms. Sola-speech Ogunsola's topic was Nigeria's mandate and progress toward a fully digital economy.

She claimed Nigeria might function as a SIM manufacturer in West Africa through the Nigeria Telecommunications Indigenous Content of the NCC. She claims that more than 100 million SIMs have been ordered by various telecom providers, ending SIM importation and bringing Nigeria's economy into the digital age.

According to Ms. Sola-Ogunsola, the Federal Government forbade the importation of SIM cards at the Lagos indigenous content expo in 2022. She said the Nigeria Telecommunications Indigenous Content program was established to foster youth creativity and advance the digital economy.

"To enhance the quality of life, expand enterprises, and outpace the national economy, it is essential that individuals, businesses, and the country make use of the derivable benefits and opportunities afforded by the emerging digital culture.

She stated that this still serves as the primary goal of government policies, programs, and tactics. According to Freda Bruce-Bennett, head of the NCC's Digital Skills and Services division, Nigeria is quickly transforming into a digital economy.

Out of the seven unicorns in Nigeria, according to Mr. Bruce-Bennett, five were found in Nigeria: Andela, Flutterwave, Interswitch, Jumia, and Opay. In addition, she claims that NCC collaborates with colleges and NYSC on ways for young people to develop their skills.

According to Abraham Oshadami, head of the NCC's Spectrum Administration, the global infrastructure necessary for proper broadband penetration means that the digital economy cannot function without it.

He continued that Nigeria has taken the lead in delivering wireless resources since there are regulations for setting up the infrastructure and ensuring its functionality.

He claims that by being at the forefront of making resources accessible to give high-dose broadband using satellite and technology, Nigeria has done so well in all of Africa.

The current AFRICANXT, formerly known as Social Media Week, is an annual event conducted in February, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

The theme for this year is "Cooperate. Collaborate. Innovate. We are using Our Potential to Ensure Africa's Prosperity.
