Brief Historical Overview of Ojude Oba Festival
The historical overview of this festival can be traced to the Early Days, between the 18th and 19th Centuries, when Islam arrived in Ijebu-Ode,, which coincided with the reign of Oba Adesimbo Tunwase.
Early Muslim converts, eager to show gratitude to the Awujale( the king's title) for allowing them to practice their faith freely, began a tradition of visiting the king on the third day of Eid al-Kabir (Ileya). This small gathering marked the foundation of the Ojude Oba.
However, this gathering grew over time. During the reign of Awujale Ademuyiwa Afidipotemole, a former slave, Alli (later known as Alli-Tubogun), began openly practicing Islam and the king never condemned his choice. His act of religious freedom solidified the tradition of Muslims paying homage to the Awujale on Eid al-Kabir till present day.
What is Special About this Year’s Ojude Oba?
Like every other year, the Awujale's Palace was filled up by both young and old, appearing in grand and elegant styles. Each Regberegbe (a term used for age group) comprises the indigenes, accompanied by friends and associates far and wide, showcasing the strength of continuity within Ijebu society.
The parade displays music, dance, and cultural heritage, with participants adorned in stunning traditional outfits and accessories. This has become a celebration of Ijebu culture, traditional,uniting people from all walks of life.
Now, it's a major social event that attracts not only indigenes returning home but also visitors from across Nigeria and even the diaspora.
FG Seeks UNESCO Recognition of Ojude Oba Festival
This year, Globacom, a major telecommunications company in Nigeria, played a significant role in this year's celebration. Their sponsorship helped enhance the venue and provided prizes for the best-dressed Regberegbe groups, adding another layer of excitement to the competition. Other sponsors are Goldberg, Rite foods limited, Adrons home and properties among others.
Nigeria's push for UNESCO recognition of the Ojude Oba Festival has the potential to benefit the nation in significant. This can contribute to Nigeria's overall development by diversifying the economy away from reliance on oil, creating jobs, fostering entrepreneurship, and promoting cultural exchange and understanding.
Cultural Preservation is another aspect of national growth. Recognition can lead to increased resources and a focus on preserving the traditions, music, art, and history associated with the Ojude Oba Festival.
