Nigeria Police Force warns against the unauthorized use of police uniforms by content creators, launching an investigation into viral content by "VDM."

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized use of police uniforms and equipment by content creators following a recent video posted by popular online personality Mr. Martins Otse, known as "VDM." The video, which features VDM donning police attire, has sparked significant attention online and prompted the NPF to launch an investigation into the origins of the police gear used in the content and the authority under which it was obtained.
In a public statement, the NPF emphasized that any unauthorized usage of official uniforms, insignia, or accoutrements is a criminal offense under Nigerian law. Specifically, Section 251 of the Criminal Code Law and Section 133 of the Penal Code Law outline clear penalties for impersonation and the misuse of uniforms designated for official use. This legal framework reinforces the NPF's stance that such acts undermine the integrity of the police institution and violate the law.
Balancing Creative Freedom and Respect for Law
While acknowledging the growing creative industry in Nigeria and the role of young Nigerians in shaping online content, the NPF maintains that certain boundaries must be respected. Content that involves official police symbols or uniforms, when created without authorization, risks distorting public perception and diminishing the Force's credibility and values. By misusing these uniforms, creators unintentionally blur the lines between legitimate authority and performance, which could contribute to misunderstandings or, worse, incite distrust toward law enforcement.
The NPF continues to show a willingness to engage with Nigeria’s creative community but emphasizes that respect for the law remains paramount. The current investigation into VDM's video underlines the seriousness with which the NPF regards the unauthorized use of its official materials.
This incident is an opportunity for content creators to reassess their methods and for the public to gain clarity on what constitutes lawful creative expression.
