Nigeria Breaking News Today: Three policemen are shot dead at a checkpoint in Enugu

Three police officers reportedly died after being ambushed and killed by gunmen at a checkpoint in Agbani, the administrative hub of Enugu State's Nkanu West Local Government Area.

The incident happened early on Saturday morning close to the Agbani town railway crossing, it was discovered. In less than 12 hours, two armed men killed Ozo Onuzulike, a former commissioner for rural development, and his older brother Elvis.

This incident occurred hometown of Nkpokolo-Achi, Oji-River Council Area, Enugu State. Reports show that three policemen were shot dead at close range, even though the police have not yet confirmed the incident.

The gunmen stormed the checkpoint close to the Agbani police station at around 8 am. The source claims that the attack appeared as if the shooters were already somewhere watching their activities before striking.

Local witnesses to the attack reported that the cops were caught off guard because they were busy collecting money from Okada riders when the gunmen attacked them.

They also said: you won't feel sorry for them if you were here. How can you sit at a checkpoint where there have been numerous attacks and just take money and change from Okada riders?

Unfortunately, these criminals took advantage of the situation and attacked them. Three people were reportedly killed, and three others escaped after being shot.

The criminals fled on the Ugboka-Nara Unateze road, carting their weapons with them. The Enugu State Police Command has yet to respond to the attack.


Furthermore, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command's spokesperson, could not be reached for comment because he did not return phone calls. 

Ndukwe claimed in a statement responding to the murder of the former Enugu Commissioner Onuzulike and his brother that the command had begun a manhunt for the evading criminals.

According to him, two of the gunmen were killed by a combination of security personnel as they attempted to flee to Anambra State. "According to a preliminary report, two of the gunmen attacked and killed one Gabriel Onuzulike and his brother at Nkpokolo-Achi in Oji-River LGA on Friday night.

Onuzulike was a former commissioner in Enugu and chairman of the Oji-River Local Government Area. A combined police/Army team neutralized them."

The gunmen were apprehended in the same LGA's Inyi community as they attempted to flee into Anambra after the Team swiftly responded to a distress call regarding the incident.

Along with other incriminating items, the Team found an AK-47 rifle with two magazines full of ammunition and a Toyota Land Cruiser Jeep owned by the deceased victims.

Also, a Toyota Camry car that the gunmen attempted to steal from another victim and a RAV4 Jeep they used in the heinous criminal enterprise. In the ensuing gun duel, the Joint Team's superior firepower caused many attackers to flee into a nearby forest with severe gunshot wounds.

However, the manhunt for them is still ongoing. The gunmen were apprehended in the LGA's Inyi community as they attempted to flee into Anambra after the Team swiftly responded to a distress call regarding the incident.

Hon Onuzulike ran in and lost the Peoples Democratic Party primary to represent the federal constituency of Aninri/Awgu/Oji River in the House of Representatives.


Between 2015 and 2019, he worked as a Ugwuanyi's commissioner. He served as a two-time chairman of the Oji River Local Government Area Council.
