The Lagos State Government has mandated strict adherence to the Supreme Court's decision allowing students in state-wide schools to attend class while wearing a hijab.

The Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, instructed several public and private agencies and individuals in a circular dated Monday, December 5, 2022,  that the directive should be followed because it was in line with the ruling of the highest court in the land.

The statement said that, as announced for general information, the Supreme Court judgment 8C. Therefore, according to the ruling 910/2016 on the use of the hijab as it affects pupils and students in Lagos State schools, students should be permitted to wear the hijab if they choose.


The state government will soon release comprehensive guidelines on wearing the hijab in schools. You should be aware, though, that the decision applies to every school in the state.


All accounting officers must read this circular's information, comply immediately, and spread the word about it so that the service operates by the law.


However, when asked about the implementation of the directive, representatives from the state Ministry of Education did not respond.
