Libya's 5+5 JMC and Liaison Committees adopt a coordination system for Libyan fighters and foreign mercenaries

A mechanism for the evacuation of foreign troops and mercenaries was agreed upon at the UNSMIL-led 5+5 JMC and Liaison Committee meeting in Cairo on February 8.

To facilitate the complete withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from the nation, the 5+5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) and liaison committees from Libya, Sudan, and Niger developed and approved the establishment of an integrated mechanism for joint coordination and data exchange.

This was stated in a report released by UNSMIL on Wednesday.

After a two-day meeting in Cairo, Abdoulaye Bathily, the  Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for Libya (SRSG), announced the selection on Wednesday.

SRSG Bathily thanked the Egyptian government for its efforts to facilitate dialogue between Libyan parties in favor of a solution to the current crisis in his concluding remarks. He also praised the leadership of the 5+5 JMC and the efforts of the involved liaison committees.

He says, "What you have accomplished here is a vital step toward securing sustainable security and peace in Libya, neighboring nations, and the region as a whole."

This development is a significant step toward fostering a favorable political environment, including planning elections in 2023.

He claimed the meeting's cooperative mood "reflects the shared objective of Libya and its neighbors to stop the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters on Libyan territory without adversely affecting the neighboring nations."
