Following an internal disciplinary process that resulted in the termination of former councilor Edgar Arendse's membership, the party last week nominated De Villiers to fill the resulting vacancy in the Drakenstein Council.

De Villiers served as the party's mayoral candidate in the Drakenstein municipality during the 2021 local government elections, where they won four seats on the council.

De Villiers said he looks forward to fulfilling his campaign promise to serve the Drakenstein community in 2021. "I am prepared to pick up where I left off and will immediately get started. I'm eager to carry out the GOOD plan and expand our movement.

I'm excited about the challenges this opportunity will bring. I'll do my best to continue serving my community and the people of South Africa, as I always have, "affirmed the previous Bok coach.

The GOOD party's national chairman, Sam Shabane, hailed De Villiers' comeback as a positive development for the party and the Drakenstein team as they prepare for the 2024 elections.

De Villiers' decision to step down as a councilor last year was motivated by personal matters (his wife's death). It was due to Theresa de Villiers, 62, who was discovered dead in a swimming pool at a relative's house in Fairview, Gqeberha, in April of last year.

The Eastern Cape police disregarded any wrongdoing.
