According to one Islamic organization, the event entailed an apparent effort to rip apart a copy of the Muslim holy book. Canada's Trade Minister Mary Ng denounced the act on Saturday and said it had no place in Canadian society.
In a statement, the Islamic Society of Markham (ISM) claimed that on Thursday, a person entered the mosque in Markham, which is located 30 kilometers north of Toronto, tore up a copy of the Quran, cursed at attendees, and then attempted to ram them with his car.

In a tweet, the National Council of Canadian Muslims expressed its "great distress" about the occurrence.
