Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya makes a swift U-turn, issuing a public apology to Rep. Alex Ikwechegh after their altercation gained national attention.
Stephen Abuwatseya, a Bolt driver who was allegedly assaulted by Hon. Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has publicly apologized to the lawmaker. The apology follows an incident that initially drew widespread attention when a viral video showed Hon. Ikwechegh slapping Abuwatseya during a package delivery gone wrong.
In a video statement released to the press, Abuwatseya expressed deep regret for his role in the incident and issued a formal apology to Hon. Ikwechegh. He acknowledged that his actions and words might have contributed to escalating the confrontation. “Good day, Nigerians. My name is Stephen Abuwatseya. I had a misunderstanding with Rt. Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh a few days ago. I actually want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger,” he said.
Abuwatseya urged Nigerians to move on from the incident, emphasizing unity over division. “I want to tell Nigerians that it’s not time for us to start dividing ourselves based on religion, tribes, or regions. We should actually come together, see how we can unite this nation, and move it forward.”
Promoting Forgiveness and National Unity
Abuwatseya called for forgiveness and encouraged everyone to let go of resentment. “Please, Nigerians, let’s forgive and forget, as it’s even contained in our Lord’s Prayer, that ‘Lord, please forgive us, as we forgive those who trespass against us.’ For there is no justice without forgiveness.”
He also took the opportunity to thank his family and supporters, expressing gratitude for the unwavering support he received during the ordeal. “I want to use this medium to thank my family members, my parents, my brothers, my uncles, and everybody that stood by me. I want to thank all of you. I love you all. Thank you. God bless Nigeria,” he added.
Public Reactions: Mixed Feelings
The incident has sparked mixed reactions from Nigerians. While some commend the Bolt driver’s choice to promote unity and forgiveness, others feel that the apology could overshadow accountability concerns, especially regarding public officials' treatment of everyday citizens.
