President Joe Biden will visit Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland this week as part of a journey that includes time spent researching his family history.

Tuesday is Biden's departure date for a trip to celebrate the Good Friday Agreement's 25th anniversary, ending 30 years of bloody war in Northern Ireland. His first destination will be Belfast, where he will meet with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday.
According to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby, Biden will speak at Ulster University about the "tremendous progress" that has been made since the peace accord was signed in 1998. So Kirby announced to reporters at the White House briefing on Monday.
Kirby, who dismissed worries over recent threats of violence in the nation, said Biden feels comfortable traveling. He said Biden will underline US readiness to preserve those gains and support Northern Ireland's vast economic potential to benefit all communities."
Kirby continued President Biden's long history of promoting peace and development in Northern Ireland. After his speech in Belfast, Biden will visit County Louth, Ireland's northeastern coast, where his maternal grandparents lived in the 19th century.

James Finnegan and Catherine Roche, Biden's great-grandparents, resided in the region until Finnegan emigrated to the United States with his family and settled in Seneca County, New York, when he was nine old, a White House official said.
According to Kirby, Biden will address a joint session of the Irish Parliament on Thursday and meet with Michael Higgins, Ireland's president, and taoiseach, or prime minister, Leo Varadkar. In addition, Biden will go to a banquet at Dublin Castle that evening.
Additionally, Biden will travel to County Mayo in Ireland's northwest, where more of the Blewitt family, his relatives, are from. A White House official stated that he would meet with family members, and travel to locations significant to the Blewitts and Finnegans of County Mayo and County Louth.
They will talk about the fierce pride in being Irish, and the values passed down to each generation, which state that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity.
The trip to County Mayo is anticipated to include a stop at a center for genealogy research. Then, Biden will speak at St. Muredach's Cathedral, where his great-great-grandfather Patrick Blewitt was baptized in April 1832.
On Saturday, Biden is slated to arrive back in the country. When asked by reporters on Monday if his trip would include a meeting with King Charles, Kirby said that Biden called him last week and told him that Jill Biden would be the U.S. representative for his coronation in May.
