BCP's July congress will approve UDC's departure

At the party convention in July, The Monitor learned the Botswana Congress Party's (BCP) decision to leave the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) would be officially approved.

The Botswana People's Party (BPP) and Botswana National Front (BNF) were the two coalition partners with whom the BCP most recently declared preparations to separate ways, claiming that their relationship was irreparably damaged.

The BCP charges that its allies have shown a blatant disdain for good governance. A BCP summit in Mahalapye in July of last year decided that the party should stay in the UDC for six months while working toward reconciliation.

The convention said that if the party's demands for good governance were not honored or reconciliation needed to be accomplished within six months, it should leave the UDC.

The BCP central committee was tasked with investigating a reconciliation with other UDC partners and informing the membership of its findings. However, according to the central committee, attempts at reconciliation have been fruitless.

According to the Monitor, the BCP central committee recently convened and decided to suggest that the UDC be terminated at the conference in July. However, the conference's location has not yet been made public."

The conference adopted a resolution to continue in the UDC for six months while promoting reconciliation. This is why the NEC thought it made sense to submit the proposal to leave the UDC for consideration by the conference, according to an insider.

Many conference attendees will unavoidably support the BCP's decision to leave the UDC because that has always been the consensus among attendees. Also, according to sources, the central committee decided that until the conference, the party shouldn't continue its efforts at reconciliation with UDC.

According to reports, the leadership believes pushing for reconciliation is pointless, given how its coalition allies are to act.
